iOS and Android App Developers

THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED - page left online for historical purposes.

Melbourne, Australia

We're looking for an iOS developer and an Android developer to join the FastMail team in our Melbourne office. Come work on the original social media platform - email - at a place that strives to put the customer's needs first.

Together with the rest of our team, you'll work on FastMail, Pobox, and our newest service, Topicbox.

When the vast majority of people get email for free, the reason people choose a paid service is because they love email. We love our customers, and we want to give them the best possible experience. That's where you come in!

About the job

Every day, people use mobile devices as their primary point of interacting with the online world, and email is at the heart of much of this. We need app developers who care about giving our users an elegant, powerful experience on mobile platforms.

Our existing FastMail apps have recently been updated and modernized. We want to build on that work, making sure they get the ongoing love they require, as well as building out great new features. We want our mobile experience to stay seamless and unobtrusive, feel platform native, and help our customers stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues in the most effective way possible.

Your local team includes web developers, graphic designers and server side programmers who all work to improve our app offering, keeping it responsive, secure and a delight to use. Our app builds tight platform integrations on top of a world-leading web-based user interface to provide a seamless experience across all our users’ devices. You’ll be part of our larger global team, meaning you’re part of a team with round-the-clock coverage.

About you

You should have excellent written language skills, strong verbal skills, strong interpersonal skills, patience, diligence, and an ability to gracefully adapt to change.

Technically, you have a solid understanding of either (or both!):

Our apps make use of Functional Reactive Programming, so experience with RxSwift or RxJava is desirable, but not essential. You’re curious enough to enjoy learning new paradigms.

Our apps are designed to provide the platform native hooks customers expect, but we also love and support the many customers who prefer to use their mobile’s web browser. The ideal candidate for these positions are experienced in JavaScript, and invested in progressive web views as the future of mobile development.

You understand that development is more than just coding: requirements analysis, documentation (your future self will thank you), testing, and support are all vital aspects of giving life and purpose to your code.

We have a long wish list of items for you to get stuck into: building more privacy features, offline support, notification improvements, better native integration hooks as well as making the most of the new functionality each operating system update brings, all while working with the latest email open standard, JMAP. All this and more!

Working at FastMail

If you come and work with us, you'll be working at our office in the Melbourne CBD.

Our US office is in Philadelphia, and we're in close communication with them. Because of the time difference, this means a lot of email, a fair bit of Slack chat, and occasional video chats. This means that occasionally you might need to be available outside normal business hours for a team meeting. Yes, you may go there at some point, too!

We encourage employees to write and speak about the great work we do, and we value people who are enthusiastic to learn and improve their skills -- and we give them a conference budget to do so. We'll set you up with equipment, books, and whatever else you need to do your job comfortably.

You can read about our values, and our blog contains interviews with some of the people who will become your colleagues at FastMail.

We see this as a full-time role with a high face-to-face communication component, so you'll be required to spend most of your work-time physically present in our Melbourne office. There's flexibility in that though - we are partners, parents and carers ourselves. Talk to us if you're unsure.

We welcome all applicants regardless of race, colour, religion, age, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, disability, or sexual orientation.

About the only thing we can't help with is visas or sponsorship. You must already have the right to work in Australia.

Sounds great, what's next?

Email us at to introduce yourself and tell us why you would be a good fit for the job! This job requires clear communication, so that message is part of your application, but please also include a PDF of your resume. We'd also love to hear about your work to date: please share what apps you have worked on so far.

Job Type: Full-time contract for 12 months, with opportunity to extend/go permanent.
