Melbourne, Australia
Philadelphia, USA

We’re looking for a UX Designer to join the Fastmail team! You’ll work out of one of our offices — the Melbourne CBD or Center City Philadelphia.

About the Job

Together with the rest of our team, you’ll work on our email services Fastmail, Pobox, and Topicbox. When the vast majority of people get email for free, the reason people choose a paid service is because they value both privacy and a great user experience.

Our growing team is looking to dedicate time and resources to improving our shared design patterns. We’re looking for an experienced UX designer to join us to document what we already do, research and test to see how we can improve, and build consensus around great patterns. You’ll work with a great team, and have the opportunity to:

There’s always an interesting new challenge to solve!

About You

You’re motivated by people. You know users come in a wide range, and you want to give them a pleasing experience, no matter their skill level, physical ability, or device type. You think good design is measured by ease of use, and great design should feel effortless.

You get excited about feature requests and bug reports from users that question your assumptions of how the system should work. You are passionate about improvement, and iterating. You have a can-do spirit, and are happy to dive in to challenges.

You have excellent written language skills and strong verbal and interpersonal skills. You have patience, diligence, and are good at listening for the real problem. You love engaging with your colleagues to find the ideal implementation solution.

You believe that creating the best user interfaces isn’t just updating the application: it’s talking to users and your colleagues, keeping documentation and internal systems both up to date and easy to use, and empowering your team as well as your customers.

Ideal candidates will have experience with HTML, CSS (and how it’s generated), and at least some exposure to Javascript. You should have a portfolio of work that demonstrates experience in product thinking, and the ability to talk about what you bring to projects. We are open to applicants who come to this role from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Tell us why you’d be a great fit!

Working at Fastmail

If you come and work with us, you’ll be working at one of our offices (Melbourne, Australia or Philadelphia, USA) and be in close communication with the other location. Because of the time difference, this means a lot of email, a fair bit of Slack chat, and occasional video chats. This means that occasionally you might need to be available outside normal business hours for a team meeting; expect to travel to the other location 1-2 times per year.

You can read about our values, and our blog contains interviews with some of the people who will become your colleagues at Fastmail.

This is a full-time role. Like everyone on our team, you’ll get good benefits. Our employees receive 4 weeks annual leave in addition to sick leave, holidays, and paid parental leave — and we’ll actively encourage you to take it. We’ll set you up with equipment, books, and whatever else you need to do your job comfortably.

We encourage employees to write and speak about the great work we do, and we value people who are enthusiastic to learn and improve their skills — and we give them a conference budget to do so. Many staffers write articles on our blog, and we hope you will, too. Several staff members are regular conference speakers.

We are hiring for this role in the time of social distancing, so you will likely work from home to begin with. But in normal circumstances, you’ll be required to spend most of your work-time physically present in our offices. We value face-to-face communications (when it’s safe for us to do so!) There’s flexibility in that though — we are partners, parents and carers ourselves, and we understand time-zone flexibility goes in both directions. Talk to us if you’re unsure.

We welcome all applicants regardless of race, colour, religion, age, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, disability, or sexual orientation.

About the only thing we can’t help with is visas or sponsorship. You must already have the right to work in Australia or the US.

Sounds great, what’s next?

Email us at uxdesigner@jobs.fastmailteam.com to introduce yourself! This job requires clear communication, so that message is part of your application, but please also include a PDF of your resume. We’d also love to hear about your work to date: please include an attachment or link to a portfolio of projects you have worked on so far.

Job Type: Full-time.
