How to migrate your mail from another provider

FastMail can import all your email from any other provider that supports the IMAP protocol.

  1. Open the Import & Export screen.
  2. Click the "Import mail from another service, such as Gmail or Yahoo" link.
  3. Enter the IMAP server address, your username and password, and whether to use SSL. The details you need for migrating from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com or iCloud are given below. For anyone else, please contact your existing provider for the details you need.
  4. Choose whether to import the mail straight into your existing folders, or whether to keep it separated in a new set of folders (you can then manually move the messages into your existing folders later).
  5. Click the "Migrate" button.

Migrations can take quite some time, especially for large accounts. We will email you with a summary of what happened when we've finished the migration. Please be patient and do not start another migration from the same account whilst the first one is still running; this will result in you getting 2 copies of every message in your account. You can continue to use your account as normal while your email is being migrated.

Occasionally the IMAP import fails to complete successfully. The email you receive at the end will inform you if this is the case. The most common reasons for this are:

Gmail server details

If you're migrating from Gmail, here's the server details you need:

IMAP serverimap.gmail.com
UsernameYour Gmail email address, including the domain
PasswordYour Gmail password
Use SSLYes
Remote server prefix(leave blank)

Once you have migrated your existing emails, we recommend you enable email forwarding at Gmail to forward any new emails to FastMail.

How to grant FastMail access if Google blocks the import

Even with a valid username and password, Google will sometimes block us from connecting to your Gmail account, as we are not using the same network that you normally log in from. If you enter your correct login details but the import fails to connect, you will need to grant us access explicitly.

To allow our import servers access to your Gmail account:

  1. Go to gmail.com, and log in to your account.
  2. In a new tab, go to https://accounts.google.com/b/0/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.
  3. Click on the button labelled "Continue".

After completing these steps, Gmail should allow our servers to log in to your account for the next 10 minutes (the import will probably take much longer; it's just the initial login that has to happen within this time). You can repeat the steps to open another 10 minute access window as required.

Yahoo server details

If you're migrating from Yahoo, here's the server details you need:

IMAP serverimap.mail.yahoo.com
UsernameYour Yahoo email address, including the domain
PasswordYour Yahoo password
Use SSLYes
Remote server prefix(leave blank)

Once you have migrated your existing emails, we recommend you enable email forwarding at Yahoo to forward any new emails to FastMail.

Outlook.com server details

If you're migrating from Outlook.com, here's the server details you need:

IMAP serverimap-mail.outlook.com
UsernameYour Outlook.com email address, including the domain
PasswordYour Outlook.com password
Use SSLYes
Remote server prefix(leave blank)

Once you have migrated your existing emails, we recommend you enable email forwarding at Outlook.com to forward any new emails to FastMail.

iCloud server details

If you're migrating from iCloud, here's the server details you need:

IMAP serverimap.mail.me.com
UsernameYour iCloud email address, *without* the domain part (for example, emilyparker, not emilyparker@icloud.com)
PasswordYour iCloud password
Use SSLYes
Remote server prefix(leave blank)

Once you have migrated your existing emails, we recommend you enable email forwarding at iCloud to forward any new emails to FastMail.
