Add formatting to emails

Spice up your email with colors, make it big and bold or small and italic, or whatever else strikes your fancy!

You can add formatting to your emails in the Fastmail web interface using the toolbar that appears at the top of the email composer. You can hover your mouse over each icon to see what each tool does.

If you do not see the toolbar, you probably have rich text turned off. To see the rich text toolbar, click the gray More dropdown menu in the upper right hand corner and select Make rich text.

Default to rich text

If you frequently use the formatting toolbar, you can change your settings so it appears by default when composing messages:

  1. Open the Settings → Preferences screen.
  2. Scroll down and click Show advanced preferences.
  3. Scroll down to the Compose & Reply section, then see the option for Compose Format. Select the Rich text option.

If you would like to compose as rich text by default but still use plain text formatting when replying to a plain text message, you can also check off the When replying, use the same format as the original message option on this screen.

Change your default font, size, and color

You can customize your text's font, size, and color by default when composing messages.

  1. Open the Settings → Preferences screen.
  2. Scroll down and click Show advanced preferences.
  3. Scroll down to the Default Style section. Use the dropdown menus on the toolbar to edit the font, size, and color of your text.
